Thursday 25th  November Genre & Target Audience:

L/O: to identify target audiences for a variety of music magazines genres and link to genre codes

identifying an audience: colour palette P, masthead names P, lexis , typography , gender D, ethnicity D and age D, mise-en-scene , music interests P , location of audience  D

Demographics: the factual data like age, gender, marital status and income.

Psychographics look at the lifestyles, behaviours and attitudes.

1) kerrang: rock, the design and content has been made to appeal the audience with bold and blocky caps text, the black and white to help influence the music style and also shows that it is also more serious than pop but the facial expression and the microphone up to his face helps the audience connect to the rock genre as it could what some people like/ relate to. Also the bright tagline/ strapline helps brighten the mood that rock is ok for upbeat people and people who like dark topics, helping more people like/engage with this rock magazine. Also his exaggeration links to 'never afraid to push the boundaries and have their voices heard.' as his face is singling like he's not afraid too, which helps the audience relate as the text besides the magazine says and because 59% of Kerrang lovers are male, it is the majority of the fandom so they try to maximise target audience by going for the vast majority, so thats why a man is on the front cover so more people can relate.

2) Q is a mixed genre, mainly covering mainstream ones( pop, rock, heavy metal etc.)
The design and content has been constructed to appeal to the audience as it appeals to who people are, their identity and what people like and their social life like Chris( a typical audience member)( on the text on the right)  who says that music is his the most important to him, so having Ed Sheeran on the front cover will appeal to the Target audience as he is a well know figure so more people will be interested as he is a mainstream? artist. Finally the wavy caps/ regular can appeal to the audience so more people can interact with it and feel individual and welcome

3) BBC music.(homework)

This is a classical genre, with the use of  a violin, the music reader( on the side) says that they have high income and will happily pay for quality, so it means that they have bought this magazine before,  as they have a passion for classical music, the main image is female with only 41% of viewers but more females play violin so it would attract people who play violin as well as regular buyers and maybe more women as it may appeal to them on the cover.

MOJO Audience

L/O: to explore & define the magazines target audience

The most successful magazines are the luxury brands- the quality as the end of the market. These magazines use the print media - high quality photography, sophisticated media language and using high quality printing on glossy paper. These add to make  brands look authorative with  high quality tones and features- but it uses light paper which is cheaper.

Every month Mojo gives a bespoke CD and their famous review section which brings you 30 pages-plus of the best that months music- both classic and contemporary

Mojo is the worlds largest magazine, it is the brand for those obsessed in music with a variety of genres( reggae, classical etc.)

two genres = rock and pop

General Audiences:

Weekly magazines target more working class than middle class, the magazines with the highest working class readership are Take a break, whats on TV,OK and Tv choice

The quality monthly magazines target middle class audience, with the highest readership being Good Housekeeping,Cosmopolitan,Vogue, BBC Good Food, followed by the weekly Radio times

The most popular weekly/monthly magazines have predominantly  female readerships, with magazines aimed at men having lower circulations. The most successful are Mens Health and BBC Top Gear

MOJO had(in 2016-17) a small circulation of about 68,000 and had a readership of about 138,000 It is more niche than those for Take a Break or Cosmopolitan which each have a member ship of well over 1 million.

MOJO U&G

Personal Identity: How might it reinforce how they feel about their identity with regards to music?

Information: What kind of information do they gain?

Entertainment: How could they be entertained?

Social Interaction: How might what they read be used with others?

Audience Activity & Interpretation:

Reading a magazine is more active than watching a film at the cinema because you can choose what information you read / you can skip things out that you choose but if you go to a cinema your forced to sit down and receive the information with no choice to have it or not.

The choice of which magazine to buy is active because you can choose any magazine to buy without being forced too with a variety  of magazines to choose from.

A young teenager who likes mainstream pop might  think MOJO as cool lively and energetic.

They offer aspirational role models- which readers could identify with
They might might reinforce a readers values- like a particular musical genre ( eg punk = rebellion) or the valuing of music as a whole

could be seen as a role model as been around for generation, or cool and sassy with cross in her mouth

Cover Analysis

L/O: to analyse the cover of a magazine, linking it to genre and audience

key vocabulary:

babyboomer generation= a person born in the years following the Second World War, when there was a temporary marked increase in the birth rate.

diversificationthe action of diversifying something or the fact of becoming more diverse.( different)

audience address =  speaking to the audience

discerning = having or showing good judgement.

house style: a company's preferred manner of presentation and layout of written material.

Codes and Conventions: written and symbolic tools used to construct or suggest meaning in media forms and products. eg bold caps to suggest seriousness and to seem official

intertextuality:intertextuality is where a text references other texts

close up shot type
star vehicle: Dave Grohl
Colour Palette: blue, white, yellow with a tint of red
Band/artists mentioned: Cat Stevens, Ian Dury, Elvis, Nirvana.
Masthead Style,  Blocky white caps
Main cover line style; BLOCKY CAPS, mix of white and yellow
Minor cover line style: Blocky caps, colour: white, yellow and grey
Puff:red with yellow/white text
USP: free CD
Placement of text, main cover line in the middle, cover lines mainly on right but some on left

Three design elements

First is the main cover line, where the placement is in the middle of the magazine suggesting importance with the capital bold letters connoting that it is the main feature in this magazine, helping the target audience to see if it will appeal to them, using white and yellow, bright and dominant colours to help appeal to the audience- which also links to the genre of rock ( not Death Metal) as Dave Grohl specialises in that genre appealing to fans.

Next is the colour palette which is mainly blue. white, yellow and a tint of red, these are all bold, appealing colours to help make the magazine stand out to both new and regular buyers, this links to genre as most of the artists names are in white whilst most of the other words/ cover lines are dull grey or yellow, helping to stand out to appeal target audience whilst also helping them to read all of the genres of the music artists (which are in white)

Finally is the star vehicle, Dave Grohl, who is male( like the majority of the target audience) which helps appeal to them. People could also relate with his fashion sense, style etc. or could just like the Foo Fighters in general. also it helps the audience know that the music in this magazine is predominately due to Dave Grohl specialising in rock- type music.

DIRT   Thursday 20th January 2022

L/O: To reflect and improve on exam style analysis

MOJO AUDIENCE: Great notes & understanding of U&G COVER ANALYSIS 1: WWW: A great start. You've linked the cover elements to the audience. EBI: Try linking to genre conventions and Uses & Gratifications too. And...the Foo Fighters are rock, not Death metal!

This helps relate to the audience who likes Dave Grohl
and who likes rock as a whole, with the majority of readers of Mojo being Men, Dave Grohl is there to help appeal to the target audience as they could relate/ like his music with colour palette of the main cover line helping to stand out to the quality music lovers that MOJO supports

Next is the minor cover lines style, with Blocky caps,  with colour that is white, yellow and grey

LO: to refine analysis of magazine covers

1. Cluttered, shows there is much gossip, news in the magazine, also not in an orderly fashion to help appeal to younger audience( teens, kids) relate to this magazine and know its is fun and nice

3. saturated, to appeal to a most likely female audience. ( bright pinks tc.)

1. Ordered, to help show that it us organised and help people to learn and get interested into the music that is shown on the magazine( saxophone )( classical)

2. It is more muted, to help show that it is meant to be organised and sophisticated to appeal to a more older intelligent audience with the black writing  to make it connote that it may not be that fun but very informative.

1.  Serif, to connote the seriousness and the quality and modernity of the music artist and to help show that it is quality throughout the whole magazine with the blocky caps helping to show that it is organised and not unorganised and cluttered like pop magazine and that it is formal, modern to attract older audiences( organised and sophisticated) and younger audiences with the star vehicle ( Ed Sheeran) to help introduce/ attract younger audiences, with the block capitals mainly targeting females as serif is aimed stereotypically so then sans-serif can be used to stereotypically attract a male audience.

2, sans serif- or script, handwriting, curvy, helps show that Ed Sheeran could write his own music, his creativity, the fact that his name is in a way, script- like font in oppose to the rest, suggests individuality and that he is fun, nice but also serious about his music choices.

Thursday 27th January 2022

Mainly sans-serif font, suggests this magazine is aimed at male audience more due to serif being stereotypically aimed at women and serif being aimed at a typically male audience as it is bold and hard, which men prefer

font style of main cover line is blocky caps, sans/slab serif and red, promoting masculinity for the target audience, american males, with slab serif typically being found more in American high schools, the red to stand out and link in with if the guy shoots himself the blood will be the same colour as the main cover line.

shot type is medium-long shot, show all characters of the band whilst also promoting the other media inside of the magazine to help even it out and make if official whilst promoting everything rather than just the main image

i would say formal because everything is neatly tucked in the sides rather than being all over the place, even though the genre is rock and the artists seem to slouch on one another, the text seems to be arranged nicely.

mid shot/close up is used to promote the artist, his outfit, his jewellery, promoting that he is rich with cover lines on the side away from the main image to promote it and get the target audience to pay attention to the main image.

informal language to promote genre conventions and that the audience isn't on a level of sophistication.

Also, the typography is different per cover, for mojo its serif and wavy capitals, for the kerrang its bold striking capitals to stand out. These are different fonts and sizes due to the target audience that each cover is trying to reach too. For the mojo, the TA is typically female with the main image and bright colours, like before, with serif font typically aimed at a majority of female audience which this cover is aiming at and the bold and striking caps(on kerrang) typically for men. Also the font style could relate to the genre of the magazine which for the mojo is pop - we know this because the bright colours connote a bright and fun setting which pop is. For the kerrang we know its heavy rock with the colour
being heavy and bright to help interest the TA which is teens to early twenties get familiar with heavy rock with use of bold capitals to help interest the TA and promote the genre of the magazine as bold caps, heavy colour and bold font are all connoted with heavy rock genre.

Next is the lexis in both covers which is different with the Kerrang magazine having 'How emo are you?' connoting that the target audience is aimed at a younger audience - teens to early twenties as being emo is a typical phase in that age range, in contrast to the mojo magazine, which has "It's Dangerous on the Edges!" connoting that the genre and TA is pop for older audience- late twenties to early thirties.

 Thursday 3rd February 2022        Representation

L/O: to explore the concept of representation in music magazines

stereotypes:

Teenagers- wild party animal, irresponsible, spoilt, attitude problems.
Men- strong, brave, a leader, masculine
Americans- hardworking, nice, strange, guns?
Lesbians-  ultra female, nice, strong due to homophobia

Connotation-hidden meaning behind a word, which gives a more emotional impact
denotation- literal meaning of a word

expression- casual connoting warm welcome for everyone that it is a nice experience
Guitar showing that he can play it, music related etc, instrument behind him to show that its normal casual that he's playing around and fun not too sensible
Tattoos showing rebellious but also playful with cartoon like images showing that he's cool, funny and  a tiny bit serious (to get a tattoo done) at the same time .
Hair and clothes- black shirt which is average to connote that he's just a normal guy, not comfortable with fame, messy hair to show that he's not comfortable again with fame as he isn't prepared with style etc.

text, as script to connote  creativity, individuality, personalisation of how she writes her own songs that this is aimed at a more feminine audience, setting in a nice green  forest background to show that its a relaxing song with connections to nature/ music piece and that it isn't about anger, rage, but peacefully and cool.
Expression and pose show soft female, a flirtatious stare looking at the audience to show that she's inviting them in, angelic feel to it, with hair and clothes to feel that angelic feel with curly hair to promote femininity and that the white shows purity and brightness of her and the audience

jewellrey connotes masculinity - can take care of a woman with his money, shows that he's rich,  shows that he's cool and fierce.

expression and pose showing that he's fierce, ready to get in a fight, with staring at camera as an expression that he will fight someone, hair and clothes stereotype men as he is wearing what looks like a bulletproof vest, which stops bullets, showing that they will be in a fight with blood guns, gore etc. which typically gangsta men typically do with a cap which stereotypically more men wear. The tattoos also connote gangsta traits and that the man is strong , fierce and rebellious, with an urban setting to show dark setting, crime( as more happens in cities, towns etc. than rural settings) with the font script to subvert the stereotype of bold, fierce man to have a more slick , cool feel.

i would describe the foo fighters as represented as bold, fierce, wild, energetic, cool.

Thursday 10th February 2022   Representation

L/O: to analyse representations used in music magazines

Use of white text promotes god-like, holy, purity etc.
furthermore, holy could be promoted further with him looking up, possibly to the heavens and God, with light shining down on one side of his face to highlight that the light above could be from heaven or a lighter a world.

Lexis used on this cover could connote that the musicians could of had some dark past, experienece with some dangerous themes with phrases such as "Burn again' and ' Living Dangerously', with the colour palette being red on that phrase to promote blood, and the dark experiences which musicians( or Ray Davies) could have of experienced in their life

shows dominace of celebrities culture on our society

The mojo magazine represents  musicians as dark, shady and tragic. This is represented by the lexis used on this music cover. Phrases like " Haunted by Phil ", " killer Rock Stars" and " Heartache and... Heroin?" all connote that these musicians have experienced some sort of dark past, with the semantic field of the words " Haunted, and repeated use of killers" suggest that these musicians have had a rough upbringing, feeling haunted by there past and traumatic events that could of happened to these musicians. Furthermore with the use of 'heartache' and 'heroin' could connote that musicians have all felt heartache and loss to result in drugs, relating to the theme of musicians having tragic and dark pasts which could of influenced their music in some way, showing that they musicians are represented as dark or different due to events that have happened to them.

Furthermore, the colour palette of black could relate to their dark pasts, or black  could connote that the star vehicle is rebellious as black is seen as masculine colour so with Madonna wearing suggests that she wants to be more masculine or feels that she is a manly figure, subverting stereotypes of what women normally wear  - bright colours, pink-red etc, rather than black, promoting themes of individuality and rebelliousness due to subverting the stereotype of women wearing bright colours, furthermore connoting individuality and a serious artist who is invested in the music she performs

Thursday 3rd March 2022   Exam Prep

L/O: to explore the possible exam tasks for music magazines

5 mark question practice:

The use of stereotypes in extract 1 are both regular and subvert stereotypes of women representation of women on the front cover of this MOJO magazine. First, Madonna, the star idol is wearing make up and lipstick, which is a feminine trait, which follows stereotypes of women on this MOJO magazine, however, the representation of the magazine colour palette and Madonna's outfit subvert the usual traits of women on this front cover, with the use of blacks, greys and hints of blues, which stereotypically more men like/ wear, and women stereotypically like light colours- white, pink, yellows etc, which is shown vaguely on this cover, subverting the stereotypes of representation of gender and how stereotypes of colours are subverted on this front cover of Mojo magazine. Additionally,  Madonna's outfit also subverts stereotypes of representation of women as she is wearing a jumper and tie , which stereotypically - 10 mins -   men were more and,in opposition,  women were dresses and light clothing, however she is not which subverts and challenges  the stereotypes of outfits and representations on the front cover of this mojo magazine.

The two extracts differ in their use of media language due to differences in genre, but there are also some differences that are related to the target audience in both extracts.

First, in the MOJO magazine, the genre is typically classic rock with exceptions being quality music over the decades, you can tell this with the colour palette, where it is black, grey with hints of red/ blue, which all follow typical genre conventions of a rock magazine. Furthermore, the use of the lexis in MOJO( extract 1) all follow the same pattern of rebellious and extreme topics, which are traits of a rock magazine( some words include "punk, junkie and kill ")

Second, the genre on the BBC music is clearly classical, with the use of colour palette and lexis to show us this, with the colours being white, black with hints of red, which are all formal and usually used in classical magazines as it is formal and not over the top, so the buyers and Target audience know that it is formal and organised for them as bold, regular colours show that it is ordered and official. Additionally, the lexis is all layed out nice and neat on the font cover and not all over the place which shows that the magazine is formal and classic as other magazine genre types has words all over the cover and jumbled whereas this isn't. Furthermore the use of capitals and sans serif, gives a nice, neat look for the magazine and the audience who purchased it to know that it is education for them and formal so they know it is nice and good and quality music.

NOT FINISHED :p

Media Language

L/O: to examine the use of media language in music videos

Mise en Scene: ( teenage dirtbag) school setting,
Lighting & Colour- teenage dirtbag- white blue, yellow , brighter themes and
Costume- nerdy high school outfit-average clothing.
props- tickets for iron maiden- -links as its surprising as iron maiden is a nerdy sort of band
performance- artists in a high school gym and disco-band with tonnes of narrative about the girl and boy.

Mise en scene ( sk8ter boi)car and punk setting
Performance- mainly performance on a street on top of a car with a crowd cheering and listening.
outfit/ costume - Lavigne is punk, street rock like outfit,
Lighting- sk8ter boi having a darker and greyer  theme.\
Colour- grey,whites blacks- dull
setting high school-car street pop punk
props- cars and smashing, phones guitar, all punk and very teen- like

What is the relationship between the costumes, props and tone of the song, music and video?..

The costumes are punk, teen aesthetic, which links with the video, as it is about teens and love and rejection which matches the teen-like outfits which relate to the song as well as the video, with the props and dance also relating to the music as well.

I think the two main themes of mise-en-scene are the lighting and the outfits

Thursday 31st March 2022

sk8ter Boi

Costume, colours, lighting: very casual punk-like clothing- studded bracelets, connote rebelliousness and punk / dangerous aesthetic.

low- key lighting connote the dangerous, rebellious streak match genre conventions of pop/rock theme.

Setting: abandoned building & urban city street - connote and match the theme of skate culture, gritty dark.

Props: old, established car, electric guitar, skateboards, spray paint- all relate to punk, skate stereotypes which link in to the theme of the song, electric guitar subverts stereotypes of the rock song.

The relationship between the costumes, props and tone of the song, music and video is that the costume is all very punk-like, with the studded bracelets which connote rebelliousness and also fit in with the tone of the song- heavy, rapid pace and loud music. The low-key lighting also fits in with the theme of teens being dark and even dangerous, this matches the rebellious streak  and hard heavy base of the song, with the abandoned and urban city street also matching the gritty, dark and teen - like skate culture which is the basis of the song and video. The props used in the video match the tone of the punk, pop rock music, with the electric guitar being the heavy background of the music, with the skateboards, bikes, spray paint and the old car all connoting and relating with the skater , teen punk theme of the video.

I think costume and lighting are the two main mise-en-scene elements are the costume and lighting as they reflect the tone/mood/music as the costumes is very punk-like and match the  heavy ,rapid beat of music with the heavy casual skater-like clothing that (for example ) Avril Lavigne is wearing which reflects the genre of music/tone/mood as they match the theme of the punk-like teen aesthetic of the music video as a whole.

they also promote the star power of Avril Lavigne as the costume presents her as rebellious and individual, an idol for some viewers(mainly teens) that want to be like that. The low-key lighting also promotes the star power of Avril Lavigne as it presents her as the video is about her, the main focus with the lighting  slightly dark to match the outfit she is wearing to promote that she is in control and the main focus of the video with the lighting to match the theme of the video.

Avril Lavigne and her friends  are dressed like street punks and casual teens. This is achieved by using the regular stereotypical teen outfits and the punk-like aesthetic to match(the dark make up and the studded bracelets. This could suggest to the audience that Avril and her friends are rebels and stereotypically the average punk-teens of that genre/age.

In Avril Lavigne's music video, it is set in an urban city-like street.
We know this as we are shown shots of tall buildings and a wide street and ,in my opinion, the video is set here because the street-like punk skater theme is very linked to outside and cultural instead of being inside where stereotypically skaters don't tend to stay in.

teenage dirtbag:

I think they chose the actors from American Pie because they were famous at the time for that film, which could promote the film with use of intertextuality references to American Pie which would get the song more attention and views.

The costume of the boy( Jason Higgs) connotes the stereotypical unpopular boy in the teenage dirtbag video..

The costume of the boy( Jason Higgs) connotes the stereotypical unpopular boy in the teenage dirtbag video.. with the jacket, top and non- stylish hat. They are dressed like this because it is too present that he is the unpopular-non liked kid in the video.

The two music videos have used setting and costume effectively to promote the theme and music of the video by using various elements of mise-en-scene to promote their their video.

For example,  in sk8ter boi, Avril Lavigne is wearing skater-like rebel clothing to promote the theme of the video but also to match the fast pacing and heavy rock-pop music. Similarly, in Teenage Dirtbag, the teen-like clothing promotes the theme of the video, with even the band wearing teenage-like clothing to fit in with the premise of the video with the two teens being in love.

setting is also used in sk8ter boi, the urban and street location represent the punk and rebellious side of the video which matches the theme of skaters and teens being actively wild outside    ,representing the mood and music of the video, whereas the school and disco promote the stereotypical american school which is the theme of the video and relates to the theme and music of it.

Camerawork

L/O: to explore how camerawork is used to create meaning in music videos

sk8ter boi: naturalistic
teenage dirtbag: naturalistic

Angle 1: shot name : high angle shot promotes the effect that she is in the middle, the star on the car, towering over the audience/crowd and the dominance she provides

shot 2:  point of view on camcorder. representing the fact that she is popular, powerful a star figure, could be used there to promote that she is on a screen, maybe on the news etc.

angle 2: low angle shot, used to make the bullies/popular kids look larger than the rest of the school, like powerful figures who won't fall to anybody.Used here to represent that they are more important characters than the background and should be focused on here.

shot 3:  Establishing shot: promotes the city is urban and regular like, maybe used here to show the car or how regular the city is and plain and simple street/ to promote thats its likely for kids to be in a popular area?

angle 3: dutch, promoting that she is singing deeply and powerful 'talent'
used to show that she is making a powerful impact and effort to sing.

camera shots:
top left: dolly
top middle: pedestal
top right: track
bottom left: pan
bottom middle: tilt
bottom right: roll

close-up/ long shot

  dutch angle(canted)

low-angle shot:

pan: 0:07 - pan quickly to the boy
2:01 dolly/track, follows the teens as they run over cars

The camera movement in sk8ter boi is more naturalistic, for example, at one point in the video, the camera movement is shaky, as a teen films here. The low shot fits the tone of the song as it is realistic, shaky and frantic- fast paced like the tone of the song.

Sound and Editing Thursday 5th May 2022

L/O: to explore how sound & editing are used to create meaning in music videos

Sound: Diegetic& non-diegetic
Diegetic sounds are those from the world of the text(that the characters hear)
Non-diegetic sounds are sounds outside of the film that the characters cannot

In sk8ter boi there is a helicopter present, the loud sound diegetic of the helicopter there, promoting the establishment of the busy and wild city, the importance of the loud helicopter could connote the importance of the helicopter
you hear spray paint cans, zip of the bag
her singing on the car with the band could be seen as diegetic
guitar smashing.
These sounds promote realism and the the city (environment) feel of the video

In teenage dirtbag- car hitting bike
girl singing could be seen as diegetic but in reality she is just lip syncing

Editing:

Linear / continuity editing = events are edited/ presented in chronological order
traditional/cinematic

Non-linear = No clear distinction of time, events cut up and rearranged .
abstract/ expressionistic.

Sk8ter boi is in linear order as it shows her moving from place to place, instead of randomly cutting to locations that are unseen. She is seen in a car, travelling to the destination in a linear sort of fashion

Teenage dirtbag is also edited in a linear fashion- there is a build up to the school dance, and the first half of the video is the guy at school experiencing his day at school.

sk8ter boi overall has more cuts and faster pace maybe to represent that teens are very active and run around a lot and very wild, like what is happening in the video.

Camerawork,editing,sound, mise-en-scene.

differences- sound on both the music videos
mise-en-scene- setting
editing- sk8ter boi is faster paced, more edits, cuts

Thursday 12th May 2022

Explain one way in which music videos use media language to differ from one another.
Refer to one example of contrasting media language in two music videos you have studied to support your answer.

mise-en-scene - setting
editing-  colour- sk8ter boi is less saturated than teenage dirtbag
sound- sk8ter boi is more fast paced with heavier pace and beats in the film
camerawork - sk8ter boi is more shaky and realistic than teenage dirtbag

My two pairs - sk8ter boi and teenage dirtbag have different settings, (which contrasts in both music videos, fitting in with the theme of the song.) this piece of mise-en-scene( part of media language) contrasting to fit in with their song and the theme of the video. Sk8ter boi is set in an industrial city, whereas teenage dirtbag is set in a high school, fitting in with the theme of their song, helping the audience know more information of what their music video is about to help the viewer/audience to get more engaged with the video due to the different settings helping influence the theme of the song.

Representation

L/O: to explore how representations are used in music videos

Representation videos:

Thursday 19th May 2022

DO NOW: women are more likely to to be sexually objectified due to them appealing to men viewers as stereotypically men are more attracted to that kind of theme, therefore watching it due to it appealing to them more. It  is probably not justifiable since it may be used to promote a sexual view towards any gender?

Representation videos:

sk8ter boi

- lots of diegetic sound- city setting, rebellious for teenagers
teenage like bedroom- messy and technology fit in with the teens
fast paced editing- action packed-exciting
clothes reflect tends in 2022, subverting girl stereotypes
ruthless action-pushing past people- shows punk like non woman stereotypes
skinny ties could connotes some sexual themes to some of the audience
Represents Avril as a daredevil, breaking many rules- rebellious jumping on cars, vandalism, joking with friends
rule breakers- block the sign but they break the rules- punk conventions
close up on cameras, aggressive facial expressions present rebel like tones
familiar rock like hand gestures connoting rebel like elements
police comes - presents the rule breaking, rebellious nature- elements of violence, rock, punk
low angle and halo light present Avril Lavigne as a star
realism camera view presents as an every day rebel- almost natural punk, naughty kids?
mostly white people with little ethnicity which is strange since ethnicity is more diverse in urban cities

Teenage Dirtbag

popular actors from films- american pie
casual- clothing connotes realistic informal school clothing
school setting enhances the school theme and the whole boy can't get girl
cross cutting between storyline and band- reinforces bands star image and keeps audience engaged
school like clothing for band makes them look silly and down with the teens with the crowd connoting popularity
Jason(boy) doesn't walk along the popular crowd fitting in with the nerd story line
loser sign on their forehead continues theme of being a loser, unpopular
crowd parts for the popular jock sporty kids- connoting popularity and dominance in the school
knocked to the floor emphasising his weakness in contrast to the popular kids we just saw]
references to iron maiden, a popular band - links to mainstream bands and what was popular when the video was filmed
When the girl turns away from the bullies after throwing food at Jason it promotes her as a nice friendly supporting character, reinforcing the romantic feel of the song/video
lyrics relate to teenage boys as they may relate to the lyrics of girls liking them.
fairy lights suggest that its like a dream, not real but heavenly
birds eye view of the disco ball, end up to interpretation, implying that it may or may not be real..
Ethnicity isn't really there in the school, left out.

Political context: Notes

PSB and license fee debate:
political debate as to whether Radio 1 should be covered by the license fee as political decision makers don't believe that mainstream popular music is important. Therefore not seen as educating/informing.

Responses from the BBC:

Radio 1 is more appealing to younger listeners which fitted the requirement for all and reflect diversity of the nation in their stations.

Convergence: Media convergence is a term that can refer to the merging of previously distinct media technologies and media forms due to digitalisation and  computer networking( eg: radio 1,radio 1 app)

Regulation of TV & Radio

The radio industry is regulated by Ofcom, who also cover the TV industry.
Ofcom's duty is to examine complaints made against radio stations, to determine if the broadcasting code is being upheld and that listeners are protected from harmful or offensive material, unfair treatment and loss of privacy

 Live Lounge appeal and format

L/O: to explore the format of the show and its appeals

The benefit of broadcasting on two channels gives the audience time to catch up if they missed something they wanted to see but also gets more appeal to know that if they missed something, then you can try and catch up on it whilst also targeting as many people as possible so there is always something available to see if the audience doesn't like a pacific show they can always check radio 1 extra and there would be a better, different, maybe more entertaining show, giving the audience the feel that they have the choice and isn't confined to just one of their radio stations, giving the benefit of having two channels increases views, entertainment and results in more profit due to more viewers..

Ricky Melvin and Charlie

Charlie Hedges is also a performer, performing as a Dj at the Sundance film festival

shows best of the BBC, give viewers a chance to see something else if they do not like the current show

Social and Cultural context:

Classical is seen as more interesting than pop

Thursday 28th June

Question 8

use PIES - i did, explain entertainment- nostalgia, fun animation which appeals children, parents.

Question 9:

analyse promotional campaign and how it targets a family audience.

The promotional campaign targets a family audience with various campaigns which attracts them. The social media campaigns, such as talking about the dancing on ice advert after it happened on facebook attracted mainly teens who used social media but some adults too as teenagers used social media a lot, so using it attracted teens to go watch the film as it was heavily popularised and well known across social media. Furthermore the television advert attracted adults and some teens to watch the lego movie as the whole advert was only lego, which was appealing to them as it was new and interesting to everyone, which gained popularity and interest of the film. Also the bright colours on the posters attracted kids as the fun animation of the lego characters were appealing to children as it looks cool, kid friendly a children are more attracted to bright, bold colours, enticing them to watch the film.

Exam Format Friday 12th May

L/O: to explore the possible exam tasks for music industry unit

Impress regulates newspapers/radio

sk8ter boi - expressionistic camera angles make it look more surreal as it is wild and more movement. in contrast- teenage dirtbag has a naturalistic camera movement so it is meant to look like an episode and not be noticed and not focused on. Different mise-en-scene- punk teenage em0o outfits in sk8ter boi support typical teenage stereotypes and support those in living in hard conidtions. Contrasts to teenage dirtbag where the setting is just a classic, average highschool which is safe and fine
